Thank you for trusting us with your care. Please follow these instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery.
Activity
- Rest for the remainder of the day.
- Avoid strenuous activities, lifting heavy objects, or vigorous exercise for at least 48 hours, particularly on the affected side.
- Keep the biopsy site clean and dry.
Wound care
- Leave the dressing on for at least 48 hours, or as instructed by your radiologist.
- Your dressing is waterproof, but avoid getting it wet or soiled — you can shower, but avoid swimming. If needed, replace it with a clean, dry bandage.
- Do not apply any lotions, ointments, or powders to the biopsy site until it has healed.
Pain management
- You may experience mild discomfort or pain at the biopsy site. If needed, you can take over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol.
- Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin, unless otherwise advised by your doctor, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Signs of complications
Monitor the biopsy site for any signs of infection, which may include:
- Increased redness or swelling
- Warmth around the biopsy site
- Discharge (pus) or an unusual odour
- Fever
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact our office, see your healthcare professional (GP), or access a Walk-in Centre across Canberra. If the situation becomes emergent, please go straight to your local emergency department.
Follow-up care
Please make an appointment to follow up with your referring GP or healthcare team within the next week to receive your results from today's procedure. Canberra Breast will liaise with your referring physician to ensure your results are followed up appropriately.
