Canberra Breast was established to provide dedicated subspecialty breast imaging reporting to the Canberra region and beyond. Our approach is collaborative, clinically focused, and aligned with best practice standards in breast imaging. We work alongside imaging providers and referring clinicians — not in place of them — to strengthen breast imaging services and support better outcomes.

Our Team

Dr Chaturica Athukorala

Subspecialist Breast Radiologist

Consultant radiologist with subspecialist expertise in breast imaging and extensive experience within the BreastScreen Australia program. She has worked as a breast radiologist with BreastScreen ACT since 2017 and with BreastScreen NSW since 2020.

Chaturica has broad experience across screening and diagnostic breast imaging, including assessment clinics, complex diagnostic work-up and multidisciplinary team meetings. She has worked extensively as both a primary and third reader in screening mammography and is committed to maintaining high standards of quality, audit and clinical governance in line with BreastScreen Australia accreditation.

In addition to her clinical work, Chaturica is actively involved in digital health and imaging interoperability as co-founder of Aurabox, a platform focused on improving access to medical imaging across healthcare systems. Her work reflects a strong interest in using technology to enhance clinical workflows and patient care.

Dr Melissa Craft

Subspecialist Breast Radiologist

Fellowship-trained subspecialist breast radiologist with extensive experience in both screening and diagnostic breast imaging. Melissa has worked within the BreastScreen Australia program for many years and is currently a breast radiologist with BreastScreen ACT and BreastScreen NSW.

She is Co-Lead Radiologist of the Diagnostic Breast Imaging Unit at Canberra Hospital, where she has played a key role in service development and innovation. Melissa was instrumental in introducing contrast enhanced mammography (CEM) to the unit and has led efforts to optimise workflow and delivery of MRI-guided breast biopsy services.

In addition to her clinical work, Melissa is actively involved in teaching and training as Director of Radiology Training at Canberra Hospital. Her practice is centred on delivering high-quality, patient-focused care across the full spectrum of breast imaging.

Melissa Fergusson

Radiographer / Sonographer

Melissa is a passionate Radiographer and Sonographer with 15 years of specialised experience in breast imaging. Holding a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science, a Graduate Certificate in Breast Imaging, a Certificate in Mammography Practice, and Master of Research (Health), she combines deep technical expertise with a strong commitment to advancing the field through evidence-based research. Her work focuses on improving outcomes for women undergoing breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
